Finding out about teaching
Minimize

We strongly recommend that applicants get some experience of being in school before applying for the course. Local schools may help, and the TDA produces a very helpful booklet on ways in which people interested in teaching can find out more:

Exploring the Options

This booklet includes information on the teaching taster course programme; more on this is available on the TDA web site.

Career Exploration Programme

Elligibility
Minimize

iTeach is open to people, with a relevant degree, who are classified by the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA) as Home/EU Students. The iTeach Programme is not available to students based overseas or overseas trained teachers at this time.

If your qualifications were obtained overseas you must provide NARIC certification alongside your application form otherwise it will not be considered.

Fees are payable for this full time PGCE (11-16) course.

Programme Requirements
Minimize

iTeach is a full-time programme. While the online elements of the programme are flexible and can be fitted in around employment, the programme requires trainees to be committed to extensive study. Online tutorials are generally conducted on weekday evenings between 6 pm and 9 pm.

Trainees are required to undertake school placements at different times throughout the year (120 days in total) and it is necessary for all trainees to ensure that they can be available at these times. One week is spent observing in a primary school, and trainees generally undertake three blocks of teaching experience as follows:

  • Placement 1: 6 weeks
  • Placement 2: 7 weeks
  • Placement 3: 10 weeks

Although the programme is available throughout the UK, potential applicants must ensure that they are able to complete the majority of their teaching practice in England. (Subject to conditions, it may be possible to carry out a single block of teaching practice outside England.)

iTeach does not pay for childcare.

Qualifications
Minimize

Candidates must possess a degree by the time the programme starts. A substantial part of the degree should normally be relevant to the subject specialism to be taken in the PGCE course, and this should be demonstrated in detail in the application by listing courses studied.

Candidates must also have GCSE Grade C or equivalent in Maths and English (see below for details).

Before admission to the programme, all students will have Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) and Occupational Health Clearance (OHC) checks.

GCSE Equivalency Tests
Candidates without Maths and/or English equivalent to GCSE Grade C will be required to undertake the Maths and/or English Equivalency Tests. The tests last for two hours and they are undertaken at Canterbury Christ Church University at either the Canterbury or Medway campus. Trainees may only sit one test per session (either Maths or English) and can only take each subject test once. There is currently a charge of
£15 per test.

Trainees should use several different intermediate level revision guides, written by different examination boards. iTeach cannot advise on the specific subject areas that the tests examine.
