After Your Interview
Minimize

Successful applicants will be sent an offer of a place by post.

If you wish to accept the offer you must complete the documents in the 'After Your Interview' pack which is provided at the interview. This pack contains important documents that need to be completed in order for your registration to be complete.

Interview Procedure
Minimize

Not all applicants will be invited to attend an interview. Application forms are screened for relevant qualifications and experience. In 2009 places were heavily oversubscribed: there were 4 applicants for each available place.

Interviews are held throughout the year at the Canterbury Campus for course start dates in April and October.

There are a number of documents that you will need to bring with you to your interview, as described below. If you cannot bring all of these required documents you must contact the iTeach office to reschedule as you cannot be interviewed without the required documents available to be presented on the day of interview.

Confirmation of Attendance

If you are invited to attend an interview, please confirm your attendance by e-mailing admissions.iteach@canterbury.ac.uk with the date of your interview and subject in the subject line, e.g. 16th October, Chemistry.

If you require any help on the day that may relate to a disability or a special need, please ensure that you attach to your confirmation the relevant request form that is downloadable from the Disability/Special Needs Advice section.

What to Bring With You to Interview

If you cannot bring all of the required documents to your interview you must contact the iTeach office to reschedule, as we cannot interview you.

  • Three original documents consisting of proof of identity: your passport, proof of current address, plus one other document. Please see CRB guidance for further details.
  • One photocopy of each identity document (except where financial documentation such as a bank statement is provided).
  • A completed Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) Self-Declaration Form.
  • Original exam documents including UK NARIC information for any international/overseas qualifications.
  • Proof of any changes of name i.e. Marriage Certificate, Deed Poll etc.

Pre-interview Tasks
You will be e-mailed three pre-interview tasks to help in your preparation for the interview. These are designed to explore issues of pedagogy and culture, curriculum knowledge and self reliance. We need to establish your capacity for both engaging with a distance learning course, and working under pressure with time limited tasks (as you might encounter in teaching). Hence these tasks will be e-mailed out two full working days before the interview. Reference to the tasks will be made in your interview.

References

All students are expected to provide two references as part of their entry criteria.

One reference must be from an academic source and the other one should come from someone who has known you for a long time, i.e. a personal reference.

The reference forms can be accessed from the links on this page. Your references should arrive as close to your interview date as possible (before or after).

Arrival & Location

Attendees should arrive promptly at the Canterbury Campus and report to the Main Reception area in Old Sessions House. A map and information on travel can be accessed from a panel on this page. We regret that parking is unavailable on the campus. Local car parks are limited to a 4 hour stay. The Canterbury Park and Ride scheme is an economical alternative, but do allow sufficient time for your journey.

Interview Structure

A short welcome and introduction at 10:00 h will be followed by a small group task and (unrehearsed) presentation by the group. Literacy and Numeracy screening tests precede individual interviews which usually begin at 13:00 h. There are two panels of interviewers for up to 24 candidates: the last interviews may not occur until 16:30 h. During the afternoon candidates will need to present documentation for checking, but are free to explore the campus and its wider environs if there is time between 13:00 h and their interview. Candidates are free to go after their individual interview. We will endeavour to inform candidates within two weeks of interview if a place is available. Places are limited and competitive: just meeting the entry qualifications, as for any course, may not secure a training place.

The best iTeach candidates demonstrate:

  • A clear understanding of why they want to be a teacher
  • The capacity to change
  • The capacity to respond to mentoring and to guidance
  • Good communication skills
  • A passion for their subject and an understanding of its importance
  • The potential to be reflective practitioners
  • Some understanding of, or experience of, working with children and in schools
  • Empathy and understanding of young people
  • Resilience and an understanding of how to succeed in a distance-learning programme
  • The ability to balance the demands of an intensive training programme with work and other commitments.

Further detailed information on all documentation is given in the Interview Documentation section of the site.
