The CLIENT ICT research, development & publications unit is well known for supporting the needs of learners and teachers throughout the UK and beyond. The portfolio of public and private sector partnerships continues to grow and the internationally recognised SMART Education at Canterbury Christ Church University e-learning and teaching partnership supports 13,000+ e-learners and teachers from more than 57 different countries.

Within the Department of Professional Development, the Centre for Education and Leadership and School Improvement (CELSI) is widely acknowledged for its work in regional, local authority, school and college evaluation and development. Bespoke programmes have been developed for coastal and urban practitioners focusing on pre-qualification and leadership training.

National and international research projects commissioned by local authorities, charities, funding agencies and governments are led by the Department of Education Research, managed in four centres: Centre for Sport, Physical Education and Activity Research, Centre for Enabling Learning, Centre for International Studies of Diversity and Participation and the Centre for Career and Personal Development.

As a community of learners, staff and students are encouraged to study in international settings through Erasmus, Comenius, research and initial and professional education programmes. The Faculty continues to be engaged in the delivery of programmes and projects in Africa, America, Asia, Europe and Scandinavia. Global understanding is central to its mission.

The Faculty of Education seeks to work in partnership with local, regional, national and international learning communities, public and private sector organisations and others in order to realise the transformative potential of education through the creation, development and transfer of knowledge.

Department of Postgraduate Initial Teacher Education

The portfolio of Postgraduate Certificates in Education on offer includes courses for those wishing to train to teach Primary, 7-14, 11-18 and 14-19 age groups.

There is a part-time primary PGCE which takes five terms to complete, and a number of courses are available on a flexible, modular route which can be completed over a time period of up to three years, with the length of the course planned to meet individual circumstances.

The University attracts applicants with a wide range of backgrounds and experience to its PGCE courses. Approximately a third of student teachers come straight from completing their first degrees. Another significant number begin their PGCE courses after some experience in the world of work, but within a few years of graduating. Many others come as mature entrants, including some who are returning to paid employment after raising a family, and others who have decided to make a career change to teaching.

The department also works with schools to provide training and support for trainees following the work-based Graduate Teacher Programme, and provides teacher training for the Teach First programme for graduates who commit to working for two years in challenging London schools.

The University is strongly committed to its equal opportunities policy and is pleased to be recruiting an increasing number of student teachers from ethnic minorities. Partnership schools work closely with us to provide good professional opportunities for student teachers with disabilities.

The University validates its PGCE courses, and successful completion leads to the award of Postgraduate Certificate in Education by the University, and the recommendation of Qualified Teaching Status (QTS), which is confirmed by the General Teaching Council for England (GTCE).
