Minimize

iTeach Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) courses in mathematics and science are intensive online programmes for graduates who need to develop a greater depth of subject understanding prior to training for Qualified Teacher Status:

  • Suitable for graduates with experience of the subject to at least A-level standard or with some experience of the subject within their degree course or professionally
  • Up to 6 months to complete
  • Bursary of up to £3,200 available

Course objectives

The iTeach SKE course aims to prepare candidates to become first-rate teachers of science and maths through:

  • Upgrading and expanding subject knowledge in a specialist area
  • Developing an understanding of how science or maths works
  • Developing an understanding of the key concepts and processes of scientific and mathematical thinking
  • Promoting and developing independent learning skills
  • Improving meta-cognitive skills and developing the ability of students
  • Allowing learners to identify and address their own learning needs.

Teaching Approach

The teaching approach is context-driven and enquiry-based, with problem-solving being at the heart of each session. Science and mathematics topics are approached in real-life contexts as far as possible in order to encourage students to think rather than simply accept knowledge and to look at what may be familiar subject knowledge in a different way and therefore develop a better understanding of their subject. The sessions take a constructivist approach, requiring students to actively participate in their own learning, undertake research, solve problems and analyse data. This approach helps students to model the pedagogic approach that has been proven to facilitate learning in the classroom.
